How tsavorites are categorised
Trade categories rather than gemological ones — these are the terms a requirement is normally written in.
- Single Stones
- Where the fine material sits; above 2 ct is genuinely scarce.
- Melee & Calibrated
- Small rounds and ovals for accent and pavé work.
Tsavorites in detail
Tsavorite against emerald
In small sizes tsavorite generally outperforms emerald visually: it is cleaner, more brilliant and holds saturation better under low light. It is also untreated, which removes the disclosure and care conversation that emerald requires.
Where emerald keeps the advantage is at size. Tsavorite above about 2 ct is scarce and prices climb steeply; emerald in larger sizes is far more available.
For accent stones, melee and pavé, tsavorite is usually the more practical green and the easier one to sell honestly.
Supply
Small calibrated tsavorite is available with reasonable consistency. Larger single stones should be treated as a search.
Colour ranges from a yellowish green to a strongly saturated, slightly bluish green — the last of these commands the premium. Specify the band you want.
Treatment
Tsavorite is not routinely treated, and no established treatment is in commercial use for it. This is a genuine advantage of the stone. We record disclosure per stone as we do for every species.
This describes the market for the species. It is not a statement about any individual stone — disclosure for a specific stone comes from that stone’s own record and documentation. More on laboratory reports.
Buyer questions
Buying tsavorites
- Is tsavorite treated?
- There is no routine treatment in commercial use for tsavorite. It is one of the more straightforward stones to sell as natural and untreated.
- Why choose tsavorite over emerald?
- Cleaner material, more brilliance in small sizes, better durability and no clarity treatment to disclose. Emerald wins on availability once you need size.
