Matched Pairs

Matched Pairs — detail
Matching happens on four axes, not one
A pair matched on colour alone will still look wrong. Hue and tone are the obvious pair; dimensions and cut quality are the two that get overlooked.
Two stones of the same colour with different crown heights catch light differently and read as mismatched in a finished earring. Two stones of identical face-up size but different depths sit at different heights in their settings.
Give us a tolerance on each axis rather than an exact target. A pair matched to within a workable band can often be assembled in days; a pair matched to an impossible one cannot be assembled at all.
What is realistic
Availability drops sharply with size and with colour rarity. Commercial blue sapphire pairs in calibrated sizes are routine. Pairs in strong pink, orange, colour-change material, fine ruby or cobalt spinel are sourcing projects and should be given time.
Bi-colour and parti-colour tourmaline pairs need matching on both colours and on the position of the colour boundary. Treat those as commissioned searches.
Sending a pair requirement
Include the shape, face-up dimensions, colour band, quality floor and the tolerance you can accept on each. If the pair is replacing or extending something you already have, send images of the existing stone under a stated light source — matching to a physical reference is far more reliable than matching to a description.
Buyer questions
Matched Pairs
- How long does a matched pair take to assemble?
- Calibrated pairs in common colours are often quick. Larger sizes and scarcer colours take longer, because the pair has to be found rather than pulled. Tell us your deadline with the requirement.
- Can you match to a stone I already own?
- Often, yes. Send images under a stated light source and the millimetre dimensions. It is a common request for repairs and for extending an existing line.
