Fine Coloured Stones

Peridots

Peridot is one of the few gems that occurs in only one colour, which makes it unusually predictable to buy. It is untreated as standard and calibrates well, so it suits repeat production programmes.

How peridots are categorised

Trade categories rather than gemological ones — these are the terms a requirement is normally written in.

Peridots in detail

Colour and size

Peridot runs from yellowish green to a purer olive green, and colour strengthens with size. Small stones read yellower; the stronger greens appear above roughly 3 ct.

Because there is only one colour family, matching across a production run is far simpler than in most species — one of the reasons manufacturers keep coming back to it.

Setting notes

Peridot is softer than corundum and sensitive to sudden temperature change and to acids. Set with normal care and avoid steam cleaning.

It is well suited to earrings, pendants and dress rings. For a daily-wear ring, advise the customer accordingly.

Treatment

Peridot is not routinely treated. There is no established commercial treatment in general use for the species.

This describes the market for the species. It is not a statement about any individual stone — disclosure for a specific stone comes from that stone’s own record and documentation. More on laboratory reports.

Buyer questions

Buying peridots

Is peridot treated?
Not as a matter of routine. It is one of the most straightforward untreated stones to buy and to sell.
Can you supply peridot for a repeat production programme?
Yes. Single-colour supply makes peridot one of the easier species to keep consistent across repeat deliveries. Send dimensions, shape and quantity.
