Buying for stock rather than for a piece
Stockholding is a different discipline from buying for a commission. What matters is turn, not the individual stone: how quickly a category moves, how easily it can be replaced, and whether a customer asking for more of the same can be satisfied.
That argues for depth in fewer categories rather than one of everything. A dealer who can reliably supply teal sapphire in three sizes is more useful to a designer than one holding a single stone in forty species.
Replenishment and consistency
Where stock is bought to be re-sold as a line, the second purchase has to look like the first. Retain reference stones from each category you hold and have replenishment matched against them.
Tell us when a purchase is a line rather than a one-off. It changes what we select and what we set aside.
Disclosure travels with the stone
Whatever treatment disclosure we give you is what you should pass on. Dealers sit in the middle of the chain, and disclosure that stops at the wholesaler is the commonest way an honest supply chain produces a dishonest retail sale.
We record treatment per stone rather than per species. Where a stone is represented as unheated or untreated, it comes with the report saying so.
Buyer questions
Gemstone Wholesale
- Do you have minimum order quantities?
- It depends on the format. Parcels and calibrated programmes have practical minimums; single stones do not. Send what you are after and we will tell you plainly.
- Can you hold stock for a repeat customer?
- Tell us when a category is a line for you rather than a one-off purchase, and we will factor that into what we set aside.
